Armillary Sphere Garden Ornament #armillarysphere #sculpture

30 Sep

sculpture_1248 ch blogMy husband bought this armillary sphere sculpture a few years ago.  I have always liked it, and was in our garden the other day and liked it from this angle so I took a photo of it.

It’s a very positive sculpture, don’t you think?

p.s.  I didn’t know what an armillary sphere was before I looked it up this morning!  Here is what Wikipedia says it is:

“An armillary sphere (variations are known as spherical astrolabearmilla, or armil) is a model of objects in the sky (in the celestial sphere), consisting of a spherical framework of rings, centred on Earth, that represent lines of celestial longitude and latitude and other astronomically important features such as the ecliptic. As such, it differs from a celestial globe, which is a smooth sphere whose principal purpose is to map the constellations.”

So there.  Now you learned something.

Have a great day!

Pamela’s Diner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania #PGPamelasDiner

20 Sep

It was my husband’s idea that we drive to Pittsburgh and stay overnight on our way to Baltimore.  I was game!  And, there was a game going on outside of our hotel room at Heinz Field!

pittsburgh_8939 blog

We had a splendid sleep, and in the morning walked over to Pamela’s Diner.

pamelas_8941 blogPamela’s Diner has a retro theme and is vibrant in decoration and engery.  The food was excellent and I would go back again to try other menu items.

Here is an omelette that I ordered.  I was ready to dig in (you can see where I had started to cut into the omelette with my fork) and remembered to take a photo for Critic Housewife!  (I can’t tell you how many times I have been at a restaurant and been so hungry that I just start chowing down and forget to take pictures!)

I love hot sauce on my food and rye bread.  Their Lyonnaise potatoes are their specialty.

Although we weren’t in Pittsburgh for very long, we want to go there again and spend more time there.  Next time we’ll go to the Andy Warhol Museum.

We really liked Pittsburgh!

Walnut Tree Sculpture #treesculpture #swarovski

18 Sep

tree sculpture_8901 blogI came home and my husband showed me the walnut tree sculpture that he made.  I actually loved it!  It’s like the tree is wearing an earring.  I told him I would like to glue Swarovski crystals on the steel rings so the crystals would sparkle for miles around and people would say, “Where are those sparkles coming from?”  (p.s.  Because of the wind it was hard to get a shot of all the rings facing the same direction so you could see all of them.)

What do you think the rings are from?

Tomoe Sushi in Manhattan, New York

14 Sep

Tomoe Sushi is one of our favorite Japanese restaurants we used to frequent when we lived in Manhattan.

tomoe_9103 blogYears ago when we went there as regulars, there was always a line to get in.  Recently when my husband and I were walking toward Soho to have dinner at Raul’s, we walked by Tomoe Sushi and

there was not a line!

I said, “For old time’s sake (not the drink), let’s go in and have one roll each!”  So, we did.

tomoe_9101 blogWe were so happy to be eating there again and the food was delicious!  Not much in the interior had changed.

Here is their “Closed” sign:

Northern Chocolate Co in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

9 Sep

A couple of days ago we went to Milwaukee for the day.  Our friend Jeff gave us a tour.  It’s always the best way to get to know a city, when someone you know can take you on a tour.  We love Milwaukee.  It gives us our “city fix.”

Turns out I needed to buy a gift for someone who loves dark chocolate with almonds and Jeff suggested the Northern Chocolate Co.  Jim Fetzer, who owns it and has made all the chocolate for 27 years, is quite the personality!  What an opinionated force he is!

northern chocolate_9254 blogThe inside of the store is immaculate, and beautifully decorated.  Jim used to salvage antiques – doors, windows, furniture, fixtures, and his past career is reflected in the decorations in his store.

Oh, and the chocolate is excellent!

Oceana Santa Barbara #santabarbara

hotel203 blogMany years ago, when my husband and I were dating, we stayed at the Ambassador By The Sea Motel in Santa Barbara, California.  I just came across these matches that I took from the hotel as a souvenir.   Since then, of course, they have remodeled and it’s now called Oceana Santa Barbara.  It’s across the street from the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara.  It’s on prime Santa Barbara land and in a very touristy area.  On Sundays there is the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Festival, which has fabulous items, all handmade in Santa Barbara.  The hotel still looks like a cute place to stay.

I would like to be in Santa Barbara right now!  Don’t tell me you are going there!  But please tell me if you have been there!

Merona Leggings @ Target #merona #target

I found the perfect leggings:

merona tights202 blogI bought them at Target:  Merona Opaque Footless Tights.  Lightweight and a great fit.  And, they look like they could be Wolford leggings!  Noticed I retouched out the size!  I looked on Target’s website and couldn’t find them.  Hope they don’t stop making them.  I had better stock up!

Only $9 dollars!  Worth every frugal penny!

Ghost Bikes #ghostbikes

1 Sep

My sister Ellis told me about white bikes – Ghost Bikes – that are all over Prospect Park.  They represent a person who was hit or killed in that vicinity by (most likely) a vehicle.  When we went to Manhattan, we saw this one:

It was sombering.

Here is more info about Ghost Bikes.
