I remember before we moved to Wisconsin my husband said the word “Awesome” needs to be banished from people’s vocabularies.
Then we moved to Wisconsin and let’s just say that AWESOME is said frequently.
We just can’t get away from that word.

If you buy cans of beans, that’s fine, but the worst thing about them other than the cost is
how much sodium is in them!
Soaking your own black beans is cost-effective and healthier.
Here is how I do it:
- Dump the beans into a large bowl and cover them with water; the water should be covering the beans by 2-3 inches. Soak overnight.
- The next day strain the water out of the beans. Put the beans in a large pan and cover the beans with 2-3 inches of water.
- Cook on medium/low until the beans are cooked. Watch to make sure the water doesn’t boil over!
- Stir occasionally. You will be able to tell that the beans are not ready yet when you stir them because you can hear the hardness of the beans clicking against the spoon when you stir them.
- How do you know when the beans are cooked? You have to taste at least a few of them and if they are all cooked to a soft consistency, then they are done. But don’t taste just one bean because the rest of them might not be fully cooked!
- Using a colander, strain the beans and let them cool in the colander.
- When cooled off, using a one cup scoop, scoop 2 cups into each quart freezer bag.
- Roll up the bags and seal them.
- If the beans are still warm, put them in a bowl and then in the fridge to completely cool them off.
- When the beans are cold, put them in the freezer.
- When you need to use the beans, just put the contents in a pot and cook them for whatever meal you are having, like chili or soup or a casserole or bean burritos. (1 cup of beans is good for 1 serving for burritos.)
