Service To Others

“Together our fundamental worth is intrinsic. It’s based on kindness, compassion and generosity, the ability to give and receive love. Service to others has a powerful effect on how we feel about ourselves as well as on how it makes others feel. There are many opportunities to serve, to switch our focus from ourselves to others.” — Dr. Vivek H. Murthy

What Does It Mean To Me?

“Doing what’s meaningful — acting on what really matters to a person — is the antidote to burnout…Face what’s happening. What does it mean to me? What really matters to me now? Is there a way I can act upon what’s meaningful to me?” — Daniel Goleman

Ripe Opportunity

“The stay-at-home edict has pushed so many of us into an external motivation mode that is making us face something that feels like lethargy and meaninglessness…At the same time it’s a ripe opportunity to think about what really matters to us…Doing what’s meaningful — acting on what really matters to a person — is the antidote to burnout…Face what’s happening. What does it mean to me? What really matters to me now? Is there a way I can act upon what’s meaningful to me?” — Daniel Goleman

Hand Sanitizer: Make Your Own

aloe blog

We have some aloe vera plants. I decided to make my own hand sanitizer. I watched a couple videos about how to extract aloe vera gel.

I cut off an older leaf. I cut off the ends and sides. With a knife I sliced off the skin on one side. It was hard to slice off the skin because the skin on our plant is thin. (I watched other videos where the leaf has a thicker skin, and the thicker skin looked easier to slice off.) I tried various kitchen utensils to scrape off the gel: a fork (too shreddy), a spoon worked good. I also used a razor blade. I also just squeezed it.

I got 2 Tablespoons of gel. I put the gel and 4 Tablespoons of 70% rubbing alcohol in a food processor and blended it. The ratio is 1 part aloe vera to 2 parts rubbing alcohol. The rubbing alcohol has to be at least 60% alcohol. I strained it into a dispenser and now I can use it. It made 1/4 cup; good to know how much one leaf made.

Take care!

Changes

day

Hello! I hope everyone had a nice weekend.

I made some changes to my site. I found out that my previous theme called Bueno (which I had been using since 2012) is no longer supported by WordPress, so I had to install a new theme. I hope you like it. The new one is called Penscratch 2. I chose it because I like having a sidebar.

Now that I have more time at home because of COVID, I am going to post on my blog more.

Take care and talk to you soon.

Unmoored

“When we take a real vacation – in the true sense of “holiday,” time marked by holiness, a sacred period of respite – our sense of time gets completely warped. Unmoored from work-time and set free, if temporarily, from the tyranny of schedules, we come to experience life exactly as it unfolds, with its full ebb and flow of dynamism – sometimes slow and silken.”

Harness The Creative

Graham Greene: He would structure his entire workday to harness the creative power of his dreams. He would draft new sections of a novel in the morning – tapping away until he had met his self-imposed daily quote of five hundred words – and then read them over before bed, leaving his subconscious to work during the night.

Why We Dream by Alice Robb

I believe in thinking about a big problem before falling asleep, and seeing where my dreams take me, if I have any dreams at all!

Confined To REM

Dreaming isn’t confined to REM sleep; it’s also possible to dream as we fall asleep and right before we wake up.

Why We Dream by Alice Robb

This happens to me a lot – I have fallen asleep at 9:30pm and wake up at 10:30am, having had a full, deep dream. Or I wake up at 4:30am to use the restroom, fall back asleep, wake up at 5:30am and have had a full-on dream.

How about you?
