It would be interesting to read an interview with Jimmy King, who probably shot the last portraits of Bowie. I can’t find much about Mr. King on the Internet.

Donny McCaslin on making BlackstarEntertainment Weekly:

“Despite the record’s dark lyrical content, which McCaslin says Bowie was still finalizing while recording, humor and spontaneity dominated the sessions, which would typically run from 11 a.m until 4 p.m. Bowie took an active role in the process, performing tracks in the room with the band and encouraging communication, interplay, and risk-taking.”

“The first week of January 2015 we did a week of recording. The first week of February we did another week. And then in early March we did another roughly four or five day period of recording. Overdubbing was in April, just one day in Tony Visconti’s studio. I heard it the first time in its entirety [in] November.”

David Bowie Keyboardist Jason Linder on making BlackstarRolling Stone:

“The sessions happened over three waves in January, February and March. We received some demos before each session, and each one was approximately a week. We checked out all the demos. If I’m not mistaken, we got together, the four of us, Donny, Tim [Lefebvre], Mark [Guiliana] and myself; we went over all the demo songs. We rehearsed them so we wouldn’t show up unprepared.”

Ivo van Hove, Lazarus Musical Director—The New York Times:

It seems that Mr. van Hove is the only person who has publicly said what kind of cancer Mr. Bowie succumbed to:

“Ivo van Hove, Lazarus‘ musical director, who was one of a handful of collaborators with knowledge of Mr. Bowie’s condition. Mr. van Hove said that Mr. Bowie told him he was sick in November 2014, via Skype, when the show was in its early stages, but requested the information remain strictly confidential. (The director said in a Dutch radio interview on Monday that Mr. Bowie had liver cancer.)”

Tony Visconti:

The producer of Blackstar, Tony Visconti said, “[David Bowie] wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art.

He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift.”

Bowie died Sunday evening, January 10, 2016.
