New love – a boy and girl are talking.
New words – that only they can share in.
New words – a love so strong it tears their hearts
To sleep – through the fleeting hours of morning.

Northern Chocolate Co in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

A couple of days ago we went to Milwaukee for the day.  Our friend Jeff gave us a tour.  It’s always the best way to get to know a city, when someone you know can take you on a tour.  We love Milwaukee.  It gives us our “city fix.”

Turns out I needed to buy a gift for someone who loves dark chocolate with almonds and Jeff suggested the Northern Chocolate Co.  Jim Fetzer, who owns it and has made all the chocolate for 27 years, is quite the personality!  What an opinionated force he is!

northern chocolate_9254 blogThe inside of the store is immaculate, and beautifully decorated.  Jim used to salvage antiques – doors, windows, furniture, fixtures, and his past career is reflected in the decorations in his store.

Oh, and the chocolate is excellent!

Prairie Fires #WDNR

When I was driving home from Target I saw smoke in the distance.

prairie burn_8437 blogWhen you live in Wisconsin and see smoke during the months of March through May, locals know it’s no reason to fret.  The smoke is from “prescribed prairie fires.”    And I’m no expert, but this year the fires started much later because of how long the cold, windy, wet weather dragged into May.

prairie burn_8440 ch blogI’m getting closer to the action…

prairie burn sign_8445 ch blogI don’t recall seeing these signs before this year.

prairie burn_8444 ch blogAlmost done.

Why prairie fires?

“Without the use of prescribed burning as a management tool, Wisconsin could lose many of its native grassland, wetland, woodland plant communities. For thousands of years, vast, sweeping wildfires, set primarily by Native Americans, were as much a part of the pre-settlement Wisconsin environment as rain, drought and the passing of the seasons. Because frequent fire played a significant role in the development of much of Wisconsin’s native plant communities for thousands of years, many plant and animal species now depend on fire for their continued existence.

For example, prairie grasses and flowers develop deep roots and buds beneath the soil, enabling them to withstand the heat of a fire while shallow rooted invasive brush succumbs.”

Madison Children’s Museum in Wisconsin #playatmcm

I shot this last summer when I was wandering around downtown Madison.  I scoped out the Madison Children’s Museum for my niece.  She lives in California and when she comes to Wisconsin, we are coming to this wonderful museum.  I was enthralled by the felt art display above the trash area.  It visually showed what items they compost.

It’s all felted and is a masterpiece!

Because I shot this last summer, I am not sure if it’s still hanging there.  I shot it with my iPod so the quality is not as good as I’d like.

hot dog_6412 ch blog

Michael’s has great food.  I was craving a hot dog when I stopped by last summer.  I don’t want you to think that I go out to eat every day and eat these kinds of foods every day!  But when I crave it, then I gotta have it.

Parking Lot #parkinglot

snow ice_7968 blogWhat is this exciting photo, you may be asking yourself?  Well, it’s what I look at when I get out of my car in the Barnes and Noble parking lot in Wisconsin.  The condition of parking lots are similar in parking lots throughout Wisconsin.  You can faintly see the yellow parking line.  But since you can’t see the whole line, it’s a big free for all when it comes to parking in lots.

Create your own space!

That’s what I did when I went to the bank today, and I saw that other cars followed suit.  I parked like a rebel, and other cars parked like I did, because they didn’t know I had parked like a rebel.

The snow gets hard and forms ice, and it freezes over night, and when you park, you have to walk with your head jutting out, or you will fall on your ass.  The parking lots are like an ice skating rink.  Falling on the ice is my least favorite thing to do.  When you are young, you can handle falling many times per year on your ass, tail bone, elbow, head.  But when you get older, it really sucks to fall.

Concussion anyone?

Annoyed: Movie Theater Seats #amctheaters

We went to see Paranormal Activity 4 last Saturday at a theater in Wisconsin.  When we walked into the theater, it was empty except for my son and his friend, so I took their photo.

Eeeewwww, look at how dirty the seats are where everyone rests their head!

Goes to show you what the camera can see that we can’t.  Or we are not looking for this nor do we think about it in a dark theater.

Theaters are actually quite gross.  How often are they thoroughly cleaned?  Sometimes the theaters stink.

I might start bringing a piece of cloth to put on the seat where my head rests.
